Treatment
Once a diagnosis of feline hyperthyroidism has been reached, there are four different treatment options available. These are radioactive iodine treatment, surgical removal of the thyroid gland, medical management and dietary therapy.
The decision on which treatment option is chosen is determined by a number of influences. Patient factors include the cat’s age, the cat’s temperament and whether there is known concurrent disease. Owner factors include cost and compliance and external factors such as treatment availability also need to be considered.
Ultimately, it will be a combination of these factors which will determine the therapy plan for the individual patient.
